Romley: Chandler official may have thwarted sex abuse inquiry

Maricopa County Attorney Richard Romley said at a Wednesday news conference he is looking into whether a Chandler City Council member thwarted a police investigation into the alleged sexual misconduct of a high school teacher.

Romley said he is also looking into whether the Tempe Union High School District tampered with the same criminal investigation.

We are looking at that, not just at the school officials, but the City Council of Chandler in that they may have tried to interject themselves into this investigation, Romley said. Romley said the City Council member may have pressured Chandler police to thwart the probe. He did not identify the council member.

Romley also announced that he will not seek criminal charges against five Gilbert High School students who were being investigated in connection with planning a massacre at the school in March. Romley said Gilbert police overplayed their initial findings to the press and should have conducted a more thorough investigation before going public. He said police dropped the ball by issuing an alarming news release.

The only student charged in the alleged plot was Krystal Miller, 15, who goes to trial in June on a misdemeanor count of disrupting a school.
